15-year-old Chinese tennis sensation Sun Xinran continues her remarkable rise, securing her first WTA victory at the WTA125 Istanbul tournament. In the first round, she defeated world No. 190 Lina Gjorgjevska 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, marking her debut at this level and a significant milestone in her young career.

Sun’s performance showcased both aggression and resilience. She dominated the first set with a 6-4 win, but struggled with errors in the second, allowing Gjorgjevska to level the match. In the decisive third set, Sun displayed exceptional composure and relentless baseline defense, ultimately prevailing 6-4. This victory is her highest-ranked opponent in adult competition, boosting her confidence for future challenges.
This win comes just days after Sun captured the J300 Plovdiv girls’ singles title, where she defeated world junior No. 14 Marija Cvetkovic 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Currently ranked seventh in the junior world rankings, Sun has rapidly progressed, becoming the first Chinese player ever to win the U18 Orange Bowl title in 2025—a feat that saw her surpass runner-up Zheng Qinwen, who lost to Coco Gauff in the 2018 final.

Compared to many of her peers who compete primarily in lower-tier W15/W30 events, Sun has boldly stepped into WTA125 competitions, facing seasoned professionals from the start. Her immediate ranking climbed to No. 678 with 15 points from this victory. Sun now aims to secure a junior Grand Slam title and further develop in the adult circuit, drawing inspiration from Chinese stars Zheng Qinwen and Wang Xinyu as she continues to shine on both fronts.
